What are donated bath towels worth?

Towels are the clearest test of the good used condition rule in a whole donation load, because the failure mode is obvious in the hand.

What a donated bath towels is generally worth

Fair market value is a range, so these are ranges. The suggested figure sits inside the band the source guide published for that condition.

Values are per item, in 2026 dollars, from the DeductiBee valuation dataset, edition 2026.1. A range is what the source guide published; the suggested figure is the point inside it we prefill, not a price.

How this range was derived

Published: Salvation Army "Towel" $0.50-$4. L*=$0.50 H*=$4 by lower median; tiers split at 35%/70% of span per CITATIONS.md 3.4. [singleSource] CORROBORATION 2026-08-04 (registry pass, no values changed): goodwill-ohio-valley-fair-market-value-sheet "Bath Towels" $2.00-$6.00. All registered corroborating, so per CITATIONS.md 3.3 they do not enter the L*/H* consolidation and the published range above is unchanged.

Like new
Unworn or barely used, with tags or as good as. The top of the published range.
Good
Used, complete, clean, and working, with no notable damage. The middle of the range.
Fair
Visible wear but still usable and saleable. The bottom of the range, and generally the lowest condition that can be claimed at all.
What moves the number

What drives the value of a donated bath towels

The tier you pick is the biggest lever on this page. Here is what actually decides it.

Pile is the value. A towel that still has loft, holds its shape, and dries someone off is a resale item; one that has gone thin, stiff, or scratchy is a rag, and rags are not a deduction even when a charity is glad to take them for its own use. Bleach spots, permanent staining, fraying at the selvedge, and a hem that has come away are all on the wrong side of that line, and no tier below Fair exists precisely because of it.

Weight and fiber separate the middle of the band from the top. Heavier cotton and long-staple towels resell better than thin promotional ones, and a matched set of bath sheets in one color is more salable than four odd towels. Size counts as its own item too: bath sheets, standard bath towels, hand towels, and washcloths are different products and the count should reflect that rather than lumping them together.

Two details reduce value more than people expect. Institutional markings, including hotel logos and facility stamps, make a towel hard to resell, and heavy fabric softener buildup leaves a towel that looks fine and absorbs nothing. Wash and dry everything before it goes, both because it is the decent thing to do and because a clean, folded stack is what the intake volunteer is actually pricing.

Backing up the tier

What evidence supports the condition you claimed

A number you can trace and defend is worth more in an audit than a generous one you cannot.

Photograph the towels folded in a stack under ordinary light, with the count visible, and take one close shot of a hem and a corner so the condition of the edges is on the record. Note the fiber content from the care label if it is still attached. Have the receipt describe the count and the type, since a receipt reading one bag of linens supports nothing you might need to explain later.

Like new for a towel generally means unused or nearly new, full pile, tags possibly still on. Good means it has been used and washed, still thick, edges intact, no marks. Fair means it is thinning or faded but still functional and clean. Thin, stained, torn, or logo-marked towels are below Fair, and the honest answer there is that they are a donation but not a deduction.

Not the same thing

Items people log as a bath towels by mistake

Filing an item under the wrong line is the quietest way to end up with a number you cannot support.

  • Sheet set

A sheet set is valued as one entry rather than as a fitted sheet plus a flat sheet plus pillowcases, so counting the pieces separately overstates it. A set missing a pillowcase is no longer a set.

  • Hand towels and washcloths

Smaller linens are their own row and our sources do not publish a band for every size, so some carry an honest blank. Counting a washcloth as a bath towel is the most common way a linen total drifts upward.

  • Rag-quality linens

Charities often accept worn textiles for recycling or for use as rags. That is a genuine donation and it is generally not a deductible one, because the goods do not meet the good used condition standard.

FAQ

Questions about donating a bath towels

Are used towels deductible?
Only if they are in good used condition or better, per IRS Publication 526. Thin, stained, or frayed towels generally are not, whatever the charity chooses to do with them.
Is a sheet set one item or four?
One. The published range covers the set as a unit, which is how it is sold on a thrift shelf. Splitting it into sheets and pillowcases would count the same donation more than once.
The charity said they use old towels for rags. Can I still claim them?
Generally not. The deduction depends on the condition of what you gave, not on what the recipient finds a use for. Give them anyway if they want them, and leave them off the valued list.

Where these values come from

One item is never one item

A bath towels is rarely the only thing in the car.

DeductiBee carries this same dataset on your iPhone, so the rest of the load gets valued and photographed at the drop-off instead of reconstructed in April.

Same numbers, offline

Edition 2026.1 ships inside the app, so a value never depends on a server being up in January.
