Three tiers, and why there is no fourth
A published range already spans good used condition up to like new. We subdivide the range the publishers drew rather than inventing our own condition scale.
- Like new
- Unworn or barely used, with tags or as good as. The top of the published range.
- Good
- Used, complete, clean, and working, with no notable damage. The middle of the range.
- Fair
- Visible wear but still usable and saleable. The bottom of the range, and generally the lowest condition that can be claimed at all.
How a number gets into this guide
Five steps, applied the same way to every item. The point of writing them down is that you can check our arithmetic against the sources listed at the bottom of every page.
- 1
Start from what a reseller published
Every figure begins as a range printed by an organization that actually resells donated goods, or by a published valuation guide. Nothing starts from an estimate, and nothing is taken from another product's valuation database.
- 2
Consolidate across sources
Where several guides price the same item, the band is consolidated across them rather than cherry-picked from the most generous one. Corroborating sheets sanity-check a band; they never move it on their own.
- 3
Split the range into three condition tiers
A published low-to-high range already spans good used condition up to like new, which is what the publishers say it means. We subdivide that span at fixed fractions rather than inventing a condition axis, so Fair, Good, and Like new sit contiguously inside the published envelope.
- 4
Round conservatively, then stop
Boundaries are rounded once, by a fixed rule, so the same inputs always produce the same output. No tier reaches above the highest published figure or below the lowest. Extrapolating past what a publisher printed is not allowed in either direction.
- 5
Show the source next to the number
Every band carries the guide it came from, and a band carried from a guide's general class row is marked as such rather than passed off as an item-specific figure. If nothing publishes a price for an item, it ships with no number and guidance instead.

These numbers may be lower than you remember
The tool most people are comparing against priced donations from a licensed feed of closed online-auction sales. We cannot license that feed, and approximating it would mean inventing numbers.
What you get instead is thrift-resale pricing published by the organizations that actually resell donated goods, consolidated conservatively and never extrapolated past what a publisher printed. Some items will value lower here than they did in the tool that shut down.
We are not going to close that gap by inflating ranges, because the gap is the product. Every figure carries a citation you can open and read, which is a paper trail the incumbent never offered. Where you genuinely know better than the guide, the app lets you override a value, and flags the override in every export so the record stays honest.
When no guide prices an item
Roughly a third of the items in this guide carry no suggested value. That is a sourcing rule showing its work, not a gap we forgot to fill.
Designer apparel, fine jewelry, exercise machines, most consumer electronics, pet supplies, and much baby gear are simply not priced by thrift valuation guides. Rather than stretch an unrelated range to cover them, those items appear with guidance: what the IRS generally expects as evidence for that class of item, and what to record before it leaves your house.
In practice that means comparable sales. What has the same item, in the same condition, actually sold for recently, kept alongside a photo and the listing you relied on. Some published guides suggest roughly 30% of an item’s original price as a starting point for items not on their lists; that is the guides’ own heuristic, not an IRS rule, and it is no substitute for evidence when the amount is meaningful.

Where these values come from
Every range on this page traces to one of these. Values are derived from the published ranges, never copied from another product’s valuation database, and never invented where no source covers an item.
