Appliances, edition 2026.1

How much is a donated washer and dryer worth?

A matched laundry pair is two donated items with two values, not one appliance, and the guides price the washer and the dryer separately for that reason.

What a donated washer and dryer is generally worth

Fair market value is a range, so these are ranges. The suggested figure sits inside the band the source guide published for that condition.

Values are per item, in 2026 dollars, from the DeductiBee valuation dataset, edition 2026.1. A range is what the source guide published; the suggested figure is the point inside it we prefill, not a price.

How this range was derived

Published: salvation-army-donation-value-guide "Washing Machine" $41.00-$156.00; habitat-restore-twin-cities-valuation-guide "Washer" $125.00-$395.00; svdp-cincinnati-valuation-guide "Clothes washer" $10.00-$75.00. 3 primary sources consolidated by lower median. L*=$41.00, H*=$156.00; tiers per CITATIONS.md 3.4-3.6. AUDIT 2026-08-04: svdp-cincinnati-valuation-guide was missing from the original consolidation; the lower median is unchanged by adding it. Published rows are unqualified, so they back the Standard leaf only; more specific types below are unsourced. CORROBORATION 2026-08-04 (registry pass, no values changed): kokomo-rescue-mission-valuation-guide "Washer or Dryer" $25.00-$150.00 (compound row, covers two leaves); hope-village-donation-value-guide "Washing Machine" $50.00-$125.00. All registered corroborating, so per CITATIONS.md 3.3 they do not enter the L*/H* consolidation and the published range above is unchanged. EDITION 2026-08-05: the CURRENT edition of the Twin Cities Habitat ReStore "Donation Value Guide", revised 2023-09-19, re-prices this row to "Washer" $125.00-$395.00 (the superseded 2017/2019 PDF printed $50.00-$200.00). The consolidated lower median does not move, because with three primaries the lower median is the middle value in each list, and ReStore's row was already the highest high before the revision and is still the highest after it. No shipped figure changed. See CITATIONS.md 7.1.

Like new
Unworn or barely used, with tags or as good as. The top of the published range.
Good
Used, complete, clean, and working, with no notable damage. The middle of the range.
Fair
Visible wear but still usable and saleable. The bottom of the range, and generally the lowest condition that can be claimed at all.
What moves the number

What drives the value of a donated washer and dryer

The tier you pick is the biggest lever on this page. Here is what actually decides it.

Both machines are valued on whether they run a full cycle without intervention. For a washer that means it fills, agitates or tumbles, drains, and spins without walking across the floor, and it means the drum bearings are not audibly failing on the spin. For a dryer it means it heats, tumbles, and shuts off on its own. A machine that needs a nudge to start a cycle is a repair, and repairs are the charity's cost, not the donor's.

Gas and electric dryers are not interchangeable to a buyer even though the guides price them together. A gas unit needs a gas hookup and a properly sized vent run, an electric unit needs the right outlet and the matching cord, and a dryer donated without its cord or vent hose is worth less because the next household has to buy them before it can be used. On front-loading washers, the door gasket is the first thing anyone looks at: black mildew in the boot fold reads as neglect and is difficult to reverse.

Size and era do the rest. Full-size standard units are what the published guides cover; portable, compact, stackable, and all-in-one combination units carry no published range in our sources, because they are a thinner and more variable market. Older high-consumption machines resell for less than their condition alone would suggest, and many charities will only take a large appliance if they can schedule a pickup, which is worth confirming before you disconnect anything.

Backing up the tier

What evidence supports the condition you claimed

A number you can trace and defend is worth more in an audit than a generous one you cannot.

Run a short cycle on each machine the week you donate, and photograph the model and serial plate, which is usually behind the door on a washer and inside the door frame on a dryer. That plate dates the appliance, which is the fact a guide range cannot tell anyone. Keep the pickup receipt: charities that collect large appliances generally list them individually, and a receipt naming a washer and a dryer separately supports two line items rather than one.

Like new for a laundry pair generally means a recent unit under light use with the manual and hoses. Good means it runs correctly and looks its age. Fair means it works but shows rust at the base, a stained drum, a repaired hose, or a mildewed gasket. A machine with a known fault is not a Fair machine, and it is generally not deductible, since household goods must be in good used condition or better.

Not the same thing

Items people log as a washer and dryer by mistake

Filing an item under the wrong line is the quietest way to end up with a number you cannot support.

  • All-in-one washer dryer combo

A single drum that washes and dries. Our sources publish no range for one, so it is a comparable-sales item rather than a guide item, and it should not be valued as a washer plus a dryer.

  • Stackable or compact units

Also unpriced by our sources. They serve apartments and closets rather than laundry rooms, and the resale market for them is thin enough that no guide in our registry commits to a band.

  • A matched set as one item

The pair is two contributions. Valuing them as one line understates the total, and grouping them can also blur the record if the charity's receipt lists them separately.

FAQ

Questions about donating a washer and dryer

Is a washer and dryer one donated item or two?
Two. Each machine has its own fair market value, and the published guides price them on separate lines. Recording them separately also matches how most charities write a large-appliance pickup receipt.
Does a gas dryer get a different value than an electric one?
Our sources publish one range for a standard dryer rather than splitting by fuel, so this page shows one band. The practical difference is on the buyer's side, which is why donating the cord, the vent hose, and the manual protects the value either way.
Do I need an appraisal for large appliances?
Generally only if one item, or a group of similar items, is claimed above $5,000, which used laundry machines rarely approach. The Form 8283 guide walks through the thresholds and which section applies.

One item is never one item

A washer and dryer is rarely the only thing in the car.

DeductiBee carries this same dataset on your iPhone, so the rest of the load gets valued and photographed at the drop-off instead of reconstructed in April.

Same numbers, offline

Edition 2026.1 ships inside the app, so a value never depends on a server being up in January.
