What drives the value of a donated vacuum cleaner
The tier you pick is the biggest lever on this page. Here is what actually decides it.
Suction is the product. A vacuum that still pulls hard on carpet is in the top of its band regardless of how the housing looks, and one that has lost suction is usually a clogged hose, a split hose, a spent filter, or a belt that snapped and welded itself to the brush roll. Those are cheap fixes for the donor and unpaid labor for the charity, which is why a unit sold untested goes for less.
The consumables decide almost everything else. A bagged upright whose bag type is no longer stocked is a harder resale than a bagless one, a HEPA filter that has never been changed reads as neglect in the first photo, and a brush roll wrapped in hair and thread suggests the bearings have been running dry. Attachments are the quiet value: the crevice tool, the upholstery brush, and the extension wand often go missing in a closet and a complete set is worth visibly more than a bare machine.
Cordless stick and handheld units live or die on the battery, which is the one component a donor cannot honestly assess by looking. A stick vacuum that runs for a few minutes on a full charge is a Fair unit at best, and the charger is not optional. Robot vacuums and carpet extractors carry no published range in our sources at all, because model turnover, battery packs, and pump condition make a five-year-old unit and a current one different products.
What evidence supports the condition you claimed
A number you can trace and defend is worth more in an audit than a generous one you cannot.
Run it across a carpeted strip before it leaves the house, then photograph three things: the machine, the emptied canister or a fresh bag, and the attachments laid out beside it. Record the make and model, and note anything you replaced recently such as a belt or filter, since a receipt for a new belt is the cleanest support there is for a top-tier claim on an older machine.
Like new here generally means recent, complete, with strong suction and a clean filter. Good means it works well, shows use, and has most of its tools. Fair means it runs but the brush roll is worn, the hose has a repair, or the tools are gone. A unit that has to be described as needing a part is generally not a deduction, since household goods must be in good used condition or better.
Items people log as a vacuum cleaner by mistake
Filing an item under the wrong line is the quietest way to end up with a number you cannot support.
Shop vacuum
A wet-dry shop vac is priced on its own row and sells to a different buyer, one who cares about the tank and the motor rather than the carpet brush. Its filters and hose diameter are not interchangeable with a household vacuum's.
Carpet cleaner or extractor
No guide in our source registry prices one, so it carries no published range. It has a pump, tanks, and solution lines that a plain vacuum does not, and a unit that has sat with dirty water in it is generally not resalable.
Robot vacuum
