How much is a donated dress worth?
Dresses are the clothing category where the occasion, not the fabric or the label, is what moves the published number.
- Typical value, good condition
- $12
- Published range, good condition
- $10 to $15
What a donated dress is generally worth
Fair market value is a range, so these are ranges. The suggested figure sits inside the band the source guide published for that condition.
| Item | Like new | Good | Fair | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Everyday dress | $15 to $20 | $10 to $15 | $4 to $10 | Source 1 for Everyday dress |
| Sundress | $15 to $20 | $10 to $15 | $4 to $10 | Source 1 for Sundress |
| Maxi dress | $15 to $20 | $10 to $15 | $4 to $10 | Source 1 for Maxi dress |
| Evening or formal dress | $24 to $30 | $17 to $24 | $10 to $17 | Source 1 for Evening or formal dress |
| Cocktail dress | $24 to $30 | $17 to $24 | $10 to $17 | Source 1 for Cocktail dress |
Values are per item, in 2026 dollars, from the DeductiBee valuation dataset, edition 2026.1. A range is what the source guide published; the suggested figure is the point inside it we prefill, not a price.
How this range was derived
Published: salvation-army-donation-value-guide "Dress" $4-$20; goodwill-gii-donor-valuation-guide "Dresses: Everyday (Women's)" $3-$17; goodwill-nne-donation-value-guide "Dress" $6-$28. Consolidated by lower median to L*=$4, H*=$20; tiers split at 0/35/70/100% of the span per CITATIONS.md §3.4-3.6.
- Like new
- Unworn or barely used, with tags or as good as. The top of the published range.
- Good
- Used, complete, clean, and working, with no notable damage. The middle of the range.
- Fair
- Visible wear but still usable and saleable. The bottom of the range, and generally the lowest condition that can be claimed at all.
What drives the value of a donated dress
The tier you pick is the biggest lever on this page. Here is what actually decides it.
The guides split dresses by what the garment is for. Everyday dresses, sundresses, maxis, and shirt dresses share one band, and evening, formal, and cocktail dresses sit on a higher one. That split is the largest single lever on this page, and it is decided by construction rather than by how dressy the dress felt: a lined bodice, a concealed zipper, boning, a full or floor-length skirt, and any beading all point to the formal line.
Within a row, the failure points are specific. Check the underarm seams and the invisible zipper first, since both take the most strain. On anything embellished, run a hand over the beading and count what is missing, because a formal dress shedding sequins reads as damaged rather than worn. On knits and jerseys, look for a hem that has grown wavy from hanging, which is permanent.
Jumpsuits and rompers carry no published range in this dataset even though they hang in the same part of the closet. If that is what you gave, it becomes your own figure with your own evidence rather than borrowing the everyday-dress band.
What evidence supports the condition you claimed
A number you can trace and defend is worth more in an audit than a generous one you cannot.
Photograph the dress on a hanger rather than in a heap, front and back, with one close frame of the zipper closed and one of the hem. For a formal dress, add a frame of the beading or embroidery in raking light, which shows both that it is intact and how much of it there is. Any dry cleaning tag still stapled to the hanger is worth keeping in the photograph, because it dates the last clean.
Items people log as a dress by mistake
Filing an item under the wrong line is the quietest way to end up with a number you cannot support.
A skirt and top worn together
Two garments are two lines, and both skirts and blouses sit below the dress band individually. Logging a separates outfit as a dress inflates it, and logging a dress as two pieces understates it.
A jumpsuit or romper
No guide in our source registry prices one, so it has no published range here. Enter your own figure and keep the comparable sale you based it on, rather than treating it as a dress with legs.
A women's suit or dress-and-jacket set
A matched two-piece suit has its own line, and a dress sold with a jacket is generally the suit line rather than the dress line. Which row it belongs on depends on whether the two pieces are the same cloth.
Up, sideways, and out
Every value on this page comes out of the clothing section of the donation value guide, which shows the rest of the category with the same sourcing.

A value is evidence, not a ruling. Deductibility depends on your own facts, including whether the organization is qualified and what records you kept. This is record-keeping software, not tax advice.
A dress is rarely the only thing in the car.
DeductiBee carries this same dataset on your iPhone, so the rest of the load gets valued and photographed at the drop-off instead of reconstructed in April.
Same numbers, offline
Edition 2026.1 ships inside the app, so a value never depends on a server being up in January.
