What drives the value of a donated chair
The tier you pick is the biggest lever on this page. Here is what actually decides it.
An upholstered armchair and a dining chair are both chairs and are nowhere near each other in these tables, so the first decision is which row the piece belongs on rather than what condition it is in. Office chairs have their own line near the upholstered chair, folding chairs carry no published range at all, and the recliner row is published as a single figure rather than a band, sitting below the plain upholstered chair. We print what the source printed rather than reordering the rows into the sequence a reader would guess.
On an upholstered chair, the arms and the front edge of the seat wear first, and the seat cushion is the tell for the tier: press it and watch whether it comes back. A cushion core that stays compressed makes the chair uncomfortable in a way no cleaning fixes. Check the legs and the frame joints by rocking the chair gently, and check the underside webbing if you can reach it.
Recliners add a mechanism, and the mechanism is the item. Cycle it fully, footrest out and back, and on a power chair check that the motor runs and the cord and transformer are with it. A recliner stuck open is nearly impossible to move and generally cannot be resold. Dining chairs, at the other end of the page, are valued per chair and fail at the joints where the seat meets the legs, which is where a glued chair loosens after years of being tipped back on.
What evidence supports the condition you claimed
A number you can trace and defend is worth more in an audit than a generous one you cannot.
Photograph the chair from the front and one side, then the seat with any loose cushion removed, then the underside or back legs. On a recliner, take a second photograph with the footrest fully extended, which answers the only question that matters about that row. For a set of dining chairs, one frame with all of them together supports the count.
Items people log as a chair by mistake
Filing an item under the wrong line is the quietest way to end up with a number you cannot support.
A dining or kitchen chair
Priced per chair and published far below an upholstered armchair. A set of six is six lines at the small figure, not one line at the large one.
An office or desk chair
The rolling office chair has its own published line, close to the upholstered chair rather than to the dining chair. It also appears on the desk page, since the two are usually donated together.
A loveseat or small sofa
Anything seating two people belongs on the sofa and loveseat rows, which are much larger numbers. A wide armchair is still one seat, and one seat is this page.
