Form 8283
Noncash Charitable Contributions, the form attached to your return once your deduction for noncash gifts is more than $500.
The Instructions for Form 8283 state: "You must file one or more Forms 8283 if the amount of your deduction for each noncash contribution is more than $500." IRS Topic no. 506 puts the same threshold as a deduction for any noncash contribution of more than $500.
The form asks, column by column, for a description of the donated property, when and how you acquired it, your cost or adjusted basis, the fair market value you are claiming, and the method you used to determine that value. That last column is where a sourced valuation earns its keep.
The form splits at $5,000. Section A carries donations of more than $500 but not more than $5,000, along with publicly traded securities and certain other categories at any amount. Section B carries larger donations and generally requires a qualified appraisal and a signature from the receiving organization.
