What drives the value of a donated suitcase
The tier you pick is the biggest lever on this page. Here is what actually decides it.
Wheels and the telescoping handle are the whole product. Roll the case the length of a hallway: a wheel that drags, wobbles, or has flat-spotted makes the case unsellable, and a handle that sticks halfway or will not lock at height is the same story. Both are repairable in theory and almost never repaired in practice, which is why a case with either fault belongs below the tier its fabric suggests.
The shell and the zip decide the rest. On soft cases, look at the corners and the base where abrasion starts, and at the zipper teeth, since a zip that has been forced and no longer meshes cannot be fixed by replacing the pull. On hard shells, hairline cracks around the hinge and the latch are structural, and a cracked shell will fail in transit. Interior condition counts too: a lining that has torn away from the shell, or a case that smells of damp storage, both drop a tier on their own.
After that it is size, type, and completeness. Carry-on sizes resell fastest because they fit current cabin limits, oversized checked cases sit longer, and a combination or built-in lock is only an asset if the code is reset and passed along. A nested luggage set carries no published range in our sources, so the honest approach is to count the individual cases on their rows rather than assign a set price.
What evidence supports the condition you claimed
A number you can trace and defend is worth more in an audit than a generous one you cannot.
Roll it across a hard floor before deciding on a tier, then photograph the case standing with the handle fully extended, one shot of the wheels, and one of the open interior. Note the brand and the size on your list. If a lock has a code, reset it to the factory setting and write that on the tag, because a locked case that nobody can open is worth nothing on a shelf.
Like new generally means barely traveled, wheels round, handle smooth, no scuffs, lining clean. Good means it has flown, shows scuffs and corner wear, and rolls and locks correctly. Fair means it works but the shell is marked, a zipper pull has been replaced, or the lining is loose. A dragging wheel, a stuck handle, a cracked shell, or a failed zip puts a case below Fair, where it generally is not deductible.

Filing an item under the wrong line is the quietest way to end up with a number you cannot support.
Backpack
Its own row and generally below a suitcase, valued on strap and zip condition rather than wheels. A school backpack and a technical hiking pack share the row even though they do not share a buyer.
Duffel bag
Our sources publish no range for a duffel, so it carries an honest blank. It has no wheels or handle to fail, which is exactly why the thrift market prices it too inconsistently for a guide band.
